Development (MHRD, GOI), Department of Higher Education
conveyed in principle a very important decision of the
Govt. of India to set up Indian Institute of Technology
(IIT) in the State of Himachal Pradesh vide their letter
F. No. 11-10/2008-TS.I dated 8th July,2008
for the establishment of IIT, the State Govt. was asked
to offer 500-600 Acres of land free of cost having
excellent road and airport connectivity at a suitable
location. This was a huge junk of land required for this
premier institute of technological learning being setup
in the State of Himachal Pradesh. After vigorous
exercise of search for suitable peace of land, the State
Govt. decided to offer a site having a total area of
2674-7-18 Bighas(i.e. 533 Acres) at Kamand, which is
about 16 KM from Mandi town. A complete proposal was
then drafted and forwarded to MHRD. In addition to this
Govt. of Himachal Pradesh also decided to offer
temporary premises for starting this IIT immediately
comprising of academic block of Vallabh Government
College Mandi for the institute and Mandav Hotel of the
State Tourism Development Corporation, PWD rest house
and Hostel at Darang for Hostels for Boys and Girls and
residences for the Director, Registrar and other staff
members. There was also a commitment for additional
building and other facilities to be made available as
per requirement of the institute. MHRD conveyed
its approval that IIT Himachal Pradesh has been made
operational from the academic session 2009-10
with an
initial intake of 120 seats
in three disciplines having 40 seats in each programme.

It has also been notified that Professor
S.C. Saxena presently Director IIT Rurkee shall be the
mentor Director for IIT Himachal Pradesh.
For the session 2009-10 the Guest classes has been
running at IIT Rookee.
